A federal appeals court has kept alive a lawsuit from students of the University of Mary Washington who contend that the university did not do enough to protect them from online harassment.
The female students suffered online harassment and threats via Yik Yak, which is defunct. The website was geo-specific, so the threats were made from someone near the campus. The university cited First Amendment concerns, but the court argues that the university should have done more, including trying to identify the harassers or speaking out more "forcefully" on the harassment.
This is far from settled, but for now the lawsuit remains alive.
